Serving Greater Las Vegas
What causes arthritis?
The most common type of arthritis is osteoarthritis; it develops when the cartilage in your joints begins to wear down. Without this protective lining, bone rubs against bone, creating joint stiffness and pain.

Another type of arthritis is rheumatoid arthritis, which is an autoimmune condition.
In rheumatoid arthritis, the body’s immune system attacks the synovial membrane, the lining of the joint that allows it to move fluidly and effortlessly. The cause of rheumatoid arthritis is not entirely known, but genetics can play a role.
Some factors may increase your odds of developing either osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. These include:
A family history of arthritis.
An injury that damages the joint in some way
Excess weight, which can put more pressure on your joints
You are also more likely to develop arthritis if you’re a woman.
WHAT CAUSES ARTHRITIS?
Symptoms can vary depending on your age, your current health, or the severity of your arthritis. Common symptoms include:
- Difficulty standing up straight or sitting in certain positions for an extended period
- Swelling or inflammation of the affected joint or surrounding tissue
- Chronic pain, tingling, or numbness
- Difficulty carrying out normal activities
- Stiffness that gets worse with cold
- Redness or color changes in the affected area
- Disrupted sleep due to discomfort or pain
- Sometimes arthritis causes other symptoms that seem unrelated to the actual joint that is affected.
How do I heal my arthritis?
Osteoarthritis can usually be managed smoothly with the right treatment, which may include:
- Heat or cold therapy: can reduce pain and swelling
- Strength-building exercise: supports the surrounding tissue and muscle of the joint
- Medication: over-the-counter or prescription drugs for pain relief
- Lifestyle changes: maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding stressful movements
- Cortisone injections: to reduce inflammation
- In more severe cases, joint replacement surgery might be necessary to heal and recover from your arthritis fully.
