Wheezing, coughing, and tightness in your chest could be signs you’re having an asthma attack. Whether it’s a minor annoyance or a more severe problem, the experts at Health First Medical Center can help.
WHAT CAUSES ASTHMA?
It’s not always clear what causes one person to develop asthma and another to be perfectly healthy. The general understanding in the medical community is that numerous factors cause asthma. They're probably related to genetics and environment.
Asthma is a condition characterized by asthma attacks ― acute episodes where breathing is incredibly difficult ― or a more general difficulty breathing normally.
Factors such as the following may trigger asthma symptoms:
· Allergen-producing substances that circulate through the air, such as mold spores, pet dander, pollen, dust, or smoke

· The common cold or other conditions that affect your respiratory system
· Strenuous physical activity
· Exposure to cold air
· Chemicals found in food, such as sulfites and preservatives
· Stress or extreme negative emotion
· Medications such as beta blockers or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
What are the symptoms of asthma?
Asthma symptoms vary depending on the individual. You might experience occasional asthma attacks, or you might have symptoms every day.
Common symptoms of asthma include:

· Sudden shortness of breath or a feeling that you can’t get enough air
· Tightness or pain in your chest
· Wheezing or coughing, especially after physical activity
· A whistling sound when you exhale
· Worsening symptoms when you have a cold or a cough
How is asthma treated?
Numerous methods are available for treating asthma. Dr. Hussain might recommend a chest X-ray, Pulmonary Function Testing, or other tests to determine how your lungs are operating. It’s important to find one or a combination of treatments that work for you. These may include:

· Medication
· Allergy medications like inhaled corticosteroids are helpful for people with asthma. Some types of medications also help to manage the asthma response long-term, rather than just treating immediate symptoms.
· Lifestyle changes
· Managing stress, improving your diet, and getting enough sleep can also improve asthma symptoms.
The team at the Health First Medical Center can help you put together an asthma action plan that works for you, including a list of your triggers.
